As the Executive Director of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA), Dr. Robert Zayas, he’s been a real game-changer, you know? He’s been instrumental in shaping the organization’s vision and strategies – to promote excellence in interscholastic athletics. Seriously, the guy’s got a passion for sports that’s just infectious! We got to chat with Dr. Zayas – it was awesome! – about his vision for the NYSPHSAA and his goals for the future of high school sports in New York State.

Q: What inspired you to become the Executive Director of the NYSPHSAA?
A: “I’ve always been passionate about sports and education. As a leader, I believe it’s essential to promote a culture of excellence and sportsmanship in our schools. The NYSPHSAA provides a unique opportunity to make a positive impact – a really big positive impact – on the lives of student-athletes and coaches across the state.”

Q: What are your goals for the NYSPHSAA in the next few years?
A: “Our primary focus is on promoting sportsmanship and integrity. We also want to continue to advance our use of technology – it’s so important! – to support athletic administration and ensure that our member schools have the resources they need.”

Q: What advice would you give to young athletes and coaches who are just starting their athletic careers?
A: “My advice would be to always remember that sports are about more than just winning. It’s about developing discipline, hard work, and a sense of community. It’s about building character. As a leader, I want to empower our student-athletes and coaches to make positive choices – and to always conduct themselves with integrity.” That’s some great advice!
